Chapter Twenty-Four
JAMIE
MONDAY, APRIL 17
NEW YORK CITY
Jamie ordered a large latte from the café near her office building and decided to make it two. âAnd throw in a couple of chocolate croissants, please.â
Veronica looked up from her computer when Jamie approached her open office door.
âI brought you treats.â Jamie placed the coffee and croissant on Veronicaâs desk.
âThis is a nice surprise,â Veronica said. âThank you.â
âDo you have a second?â Jamie asked.
âI do. Have a seat. There are a couple of things I wanted to talk to you about.â Veronica took the lid off the latte and blew on it to cool it down. âI was really impressed with how you handled the news of Harrisonâs promotion on Friday. I know that couldnât have been easy.â She looked at Jamie sympathetically.
âYeah, not the best day. And I still think you made the wrong decision,â Jamie said. âItâs going to sting for a while.â
Jamie had found herself wondering over the weekend whether now would be the right time to get her résumé together and apply to the Times or the Washington Post. The thing was, despite how much she felt impelled, perhaps compelled, to switch over to a legacy publication, she really loved working at BusinessBerry. If only she could get her fatherâs voice out of her ears.
âIâm sure it will,â Veronica said.
âI hope you felt like I fought hard enough for it.â
âIâve always respected your passion, Jamie. Youâve never been one to take no for an answer. But you also know when the fight is over, when to pack it in, go home, and prepare for the next fight.â
âIâm preparing.â
âIâm sure you are,â Veronica said, smiling. âAnd the big news is that I got an email from Annaâs assistant Ian this morning, at the crack of dawn California time, saying that sheâll do the conference Friday!â
âOh, amazing!â Jamie said. âThatâs a huge relief.â
âIâd put out feelers to some big names this weekend, but I hadnât gotten any commitments, so this is absolutely a relief.â
âI heard weâre up to over five hundred attendees.â
âYep, five hundred and forty-eight as of eight oâclock this morning,â Veronica said, nodding with a huge smile on her face. âNow what did you want to discuss?â
âI have an idea for a story I wanted to pitch you.â
âYou know you really should be pitching to Harrison. Heâs in charge of the vertical now.â
Jamie sighed loudly, deflated, and sat back in her chair. She didnât mean to come off petulant, she just felt frustrated, and unfortunately the reactions were the same.
âFine, but this is the last time,â Veronica said. âWhatâs the story?â
âItâs about Anna.â
âWhat about her?â
Jamie straightened her posture, sat a bit forward in her chair. Her voice was steady, confident. âI have sources at BrightLife who have made allegations that BrightSpot isnât anywhere near being ready to go to market. In light of the recent news about their IPOââ
âDo you have their statements on the record?â Veronica asked, her tone skeptical.
âNo, but I havenât formally interviewed them yet.â
âAbsolutely not, Jamie.â
âVeronica, please.
